Despite the best medical advances and ongoing cutting edge
research, our current health care system is not designed to help individuals
consistently receive the best care available, engage communities in advancing
healthy lifestyles, and control health care costs. Overutilization of services
with questionable benefit, underutilization of services frequently needed, and
variations across providers in how health care is delivered continue to
negatively impact our health care system.
Health plans are working in partnership with physicians,
hospitals, and other clinicians to help change the delivery system by offering
decision support tools, exchange of key health information that helps providers
recognize gaps in care, and innovative payment models that focus on paying for
improved patient care and not volume of services provided. Health plans play a
unique role in these partnerships that emphasize collaborations across multiple
health care settings.
